# ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED in Chrome on Mac

Chromium describes this error as: “The network changed.” Chrome stopped the load because the Mac's network changed during it.

Applies to: Google Chrome and other Chromium browsers on all current macOS versions. · Checked: 29 October 2026

## Symptoms

- Chrome shows ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED and says that a network change was detected.
- It happens again and again, or only when a VPN connects.

## Likely causes

- **A VPN that connects or reconnects.** Each time the VPN changes the routes, the network changes for Chrome.
- **Wi-Fi that switches networks.** The Mac moves between two known networks, for example a router and a hotspot.
- **An adapter that comes and goes.** A USB Ethernet adapter, a dock or a tethered phone connects and disconnects.
- **Virtual network interfaces.** Virtual machines and container tools can add and remove network interfaces.

## How to check

1. Note when the error appears. Compare it with VPN, Wi-Fi and dock events.
2. Watch the network state. Run it again when the error appears and compare.

   ```
   scutil --nwi
   ```
3. List the interfaces and their addresses.

   ```
   ifconfig -l
   ```
4. Hold the Option key and click the Wi-Fi icon. Make sure that the network does not change.

## How to fix it

1. If a VPN reconnects often, update it or ask its provider.
2. If the Mac switches between networks, change the order or turn off Auto-Join. See [Mac joins the wrong Wi-Fi network](https://kilobat.app/guides/mac-joins-wrong-wifi.html).
3. Connect the adapter or dock firmly, or try another port.
4. Reload the page. The error stops when the network stays the same.

## With Kilobat

1. Show network changes, drops and roams that the app recorded, with their times.

   ```
   kilobat outages
   ```
2. Show the route and the VPN that traffic uses now.

   ```
   kilobat ip
   ```
3. The CLI is free. Outage history in the app needs Pro.

## Questions

**Is ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED dangerous?**

No. Chrome stops the load to start it again on the new network.
