# Age of Empires II multiplayer on Mac: connection and compatibility

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has a native Mac version. Check multiplayer compatibility before changing your network.

Applies to: Native macOS version on supported Apple silicon Macs. Requirements and cross-play support can change. · Checked: 2 November 2026

## Symptoms

- A friend’s lobby does not appear.
- A multiplayer session lags or disconnects.

## Likely causes

- **Platform compatibility.** Feral describes Mac multiplayer with other macOS players. The cited page does not promise multiplayer with Windows or consoles.
- **Connection or local performance.** Wi-Fi interference, network congestion or local performance can interrupt a session.

## Check the game and connection

1. Confirm each player’s platform and the current compatibility guidance from Feral.
2. Confirm both players have the correct game and current compatible version.
3. Check Steam service status and try another site to see whether the connection problem is broader.
4. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi if possible. See [Test for packet loss on a Mac with ping](https://kilobat.app/guides/packet-loss-mac).
5. Feral’s cited Mac material does not list game server regions. Ask Feral about the current network path.

## How to fix it

1. If a lobby is missing, check the game’s current multiplayer compatibility before changing router settings.
2. Pause large downloads and retry.
3. If Wi-Fi is the weaker path, follow [Weak Wi-Fi signal on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/guides/weak-wifi-signal-mac).
4. If the problem continues, contact Feral support with the platform, version and time.

## With Kilobat

1. Run a general connection test on the Mac. This cannot establish a particular game server is healthy.

   ```
   kilobat diagnose
   ```
2. Try finding the active match connection; macOS may not expose its address.

   ```
   kilobat games --match
   ```

## Questions

**Can I play the native Mac version online?**

Feral describes online multiplayer with other macOS players. Check its current FAQ for platform compatibility.

**Does a regional ping prove my native Mac match will use that region?**

No. The cited Mac sources do not establish that a particular regional test target represents the match.

**What port or NAT type does the Mac version require?**

The cited Mac sources do not provide a complete port list or universal NAT requirement. Ask Feral or the network administrator.
