# Epson printer Wi-Fi: Smart Panel, Wi-Fi Direct and connection fixes

Supported Epson printers can join a local network or connect directly to another device with Wi-Fi Direct. Controls, network support and setup steps differ by model.

Wi-Fi

Check the exact printer model’s manual for its supported Wi-Fi bands.

Security

Check the model’s specifications and network instructions for supported security.

**Checked 2 November 2026.** Epson Smart Panel and Wi-Fi Direct guidance for supported models including WorkForce WF-2960 and EcoTank ET-8500/ET-8550, checked November 2026.

## Wi-Fi it needs

For ordinary network printing, put the printer on your local network and connect the Mac or phone to the same network. Epson’s model-specific guides also describe Wi-Fi Direct, which connects a device directly without a router.

Epson’s Smart Panel instructions use a Bluetooth-enabled phone or tablet close enough to the printer to maintain a Bluetooth connection. Have the home network name and password ready.

Wi-Fi Direct availability, the maximum number of connected devices and control-panel labels differ by model. The WF-2960 and ET-8500/ET-8550 guides describe Simple AP mode for up to eight devices.

Check your printer’s manual before changing the router’s bands or security. A setting supported by one Epson model may not apply to another.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat scan` lists the networks around your Mac with their band and channel, so you can see whether yours is on 2.4 GHz at all, and `kilobat channels` names the least crowded channel. More in [Wi-Fi on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/wifi-analyzer-mac).

## Set it up

For supported models, Epson Smart Panel can set up wireless printing from an iOS or Android device.

1. Complete initial printer setup and ink installation.
2. Connect the phone or tablet to the intended wireless network.
3. Turn on the printer and keep the phone near it.
4. Open Epson Smart Panel and follow the detected printer’s instructions.
5. If it is not detected, select **+** and follow the setup prompts.

Epson suggests using the printer control panel to connect to Wi-Fi if Smart Panel still cannot find it, then choosing the existing product in the app.

### Connect directly

On supported models, open the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct setup and use the displayed network name and password on the device. Epson’s exact sequence depends on the printer.

For printing from a computer, some Epson manuals instruct you to install the network software from Epson. Follow the manual for your model and return to your regular network afterwards if needed.

**Kilobat can help.** Once it has joined, Kilobat’s **Tools › Devices** lists it with its address and maker, and [new-device alerts](https://kilobat.app/docs/home-network#new-devices) tell you whenever something new joins your home Wi-Fi.

## How much data it uses

For a capped connection, check the printer’s documentation for any cloud printing, firmware download or other internet service you choose to use.

Epson’s cited setup guides do not publish a typical internet data-use figure for printing. Cloud features and software updates can use a different path from a local print job.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat counts what your Mac sends and receives, app by app, not what other devices use. On a shared or capped connection, its [bandwidth monitor](https://kilobat.app/mac-bandwidth-monitor) and [hotspot data saving](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data) look after the Mac’s share.

## Guest, hotel and dorm Wi-Fi

A guest network can isolate devices and prevent a Mac or phone from discovering a printer, even if both can access the internet. Ask the network administrator whether local printing is allowed.

Wi-Fi Direct on a supported model is a separate direct link and does not require a wireless router. Follow the printer’s instructions and use the name and password shown by that printer.

The Mac or phone may need to switch away from its ordinary Wi-Fi network to use a direct connection. Reconnect to the regular network when finished.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat devices --bonjour` lists the devices your Mac can reach and the services they advertise. If other devices do not appear, client isolation is one possible cause; sleeping devices and discovery settings can also affect results.

## When it won’t connect

Check the printer and network before changing its configuration.

1. Check that the printer is powered on and ready to print.
2. Check the Mac and printer are on the same network for ordinary network printing.
3. In Smart Panel, move the phone closer if the printer is not found.
4. If the app still cannot find it, use the printer’s control panel to connect it.
5. Choose the existing network product in Smart Panel and follow the prompts.

If using Wi-Fi Direct, check the selected network name and password against the printer display or status sheet.

**Kilobat can help.** Before you blame the device, Kilobat’s [Why can’t it connect?](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/why-cant-it-connect) and `kilobat diagnose` check the Wi-Fi, router, internet and DNS from your Mac.

## When it keeps going offline

If a previously working printer appears offline, separate a power or queue problem from a network connection problem.

1. Check the printer is on, has paper and displays no error.
2. Check the Mac and printer are still on the intended network.
3. Inspect the Mac’s print queue for a failed job.
4. Restart the printer and retry the job.
5. Consult Epson’s support page for the exact model if it remains unavailable.

Avoid restoring network settings until you have the model’s instructions and the details needed to reconnect it.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat health-history` shows whether the router or the internet dropped at the same time, and `kilobat devices --all` marks a device that stopped answering as away. To check the signal where it sits, take your Mac there and use Kilobat’s [radar](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/find-better-wifi-spot).

## Questions

**Can an Epson printer connect without a router?**

Supported Epson models offer Wi-Fi Direct for a direct connection. Follow the instructions for your specific printer.

**Why can’t Smart Panel find my printer?**

Epson recommends moving the phone closer. If it still cannot find the printer, connect the printer using its control panel and select the existing product in the app.

## See your network from your Mac

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network.
