# ecobee thermostat Wi-Fi: supported bands, setup and offline fixes

An ecobee thermostat connects to your home Wi-Fi for remote features. Network support and menu labels vary by model.

Wi-Fi

Essential uses 2.4 GHz; Premium, Enhanced and Smart Thermostat with Voice Control also support 5 GHz.

Security

Essential lists WPA2 and WPA3. ecobee’s general troubleshooting guide lists WPA/WPA2 and says TKIP is unsupported; check the exact model.

## Wi-Fi it needs

ecobee’s troubleshooting guide lists 2.4 and 5 GHz support for Smart Thermostat Premium, Enhanced and Smart Thermostat with Voice Control.

Smart Thermostat Essential specifies Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 GHz. For other models, check the exact product’s specifications. The troubleshooting guide recommends using 2.4 GHz on a dual-band network.

Essential’s product specifications list WPA2 and WPA3. The general troubleshooting guide lists WPA/WPA2 and says TKIP encryption is not supported. Check the security required by your model and your router’s documentation.

If the router combines bands under one name, the name alone does not establish which band the thermostat uses. Test 2.4 GHz if connection problems persist.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat scan` lists the networks around your Mac with their band and channel, so you can see whether yours is on 2.4 GHz at all, and `kilobat channels` names the least crowded channel. More in [Wi-Fi on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/wifi-analyzer-mac).

## Set it up

Use the thermostat’s own Wi-Fi menu to choose a network. ecobee documents a separate menu path for Lite and Essential.

1. Open the thermostat’s **Main Menu**.
2. For Premium or Enhanced, open **General › Settings › Wi-Fi**.
3. For Lite or Essential, open **Settings › Wi-Fi**.
4. Choose **Select Wi-Fi Network** and select the home network.
5. Enter the network password and wait for the connection.
6. Follow the registration prompts to link the thermostat to the app.

A connected thermostat can display a code or QR code for linking to the mobile app. Menu labels can change with software.

**Kilobat can help.** Once it has joined, Kilobat’s **Tools › Devices** lists it with its address and maker, and [new-device alerts](https://kilobat.app/docs/home-network#new-devices) tell you whenever something new joins your home Wi-Fi.

## How much data it uses

Traffic can vary with use and connected features. Check a router’s per-device counters if it provides them.

Kilobat’s bandwidth view measures the Mac’s traffic, not traffic generated by the thermostat.

ecobee lists 5 MB per month for Smart Thermostat Essential. The cited support pages do not give a daily or monthly total for the other models covered here.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat counts what your Mac sends and receives, app by app, not what other devices use. On a shared or capped connection, its [bandwidth monitor](https://kilobat.app/mac-bandwidth-monitor) and [hotspot data saving](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data) look after the Mac’s share.

## Guest, hotel and dorm Wi-Fi

The cited ecobee support pages describe a home network; they do not establish support for every hotel or campus sign-in page.

A guest network can prevent local devices from communicating or change access rules. Ask its administrator before relying on it.

For Apple Home setup, ecobee asks that the thermostat have a strong Wi-Fi signal. Follow the platform’s own requirements for remote access.

ecobee suggests a phone hotspot as a temporary comparison when troubleshooting. The phone’s plan and availability limit that test.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat devices --bonjour` lists the devices your Mac can reach and the services they advertise. If other devices do not appear, client isolation is one possible cause; sleeping devices and discovery settings can also affect results.

## When it won’t connect

First check that the thermostat has power. A blank screen is a separate problem from an offline app status.

1. Check that another device can use the home network.
2. Check that the thermostat supports the band you selected.
3. Open its Wi-Fi menu and choose the intended network.
4. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.
5. Note the error and the stage where it appears.
6. If needed, follow ecobee’s hotspot comparison instructions.
7. Contact ecobee support if the connection still fails.

A successful hotspot comparison can point toward the home network configuration. It does not identify a specific faulty setting.

**Kilobat can help.** Before you blame the device, Kilobat’s [Why can’t it connect?](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/why-cant-it-connect) and `kilobat diagnose` check the Wi-Fi, router, internet and DNS from your Mac.

## When it keeps going offline

If the display is on but the app shows offline, ecobee recommends checking the network and then rebooting the thermostat.

1. Check whether the router is online on another device.
2. Restart the router if appropriate and wait for internet access to return.
3. Follow ecobee’s model-specific instructions to reboot the thermostat.
4. Open its Wi-Fi menu and select the home network.
5. Check signal strength in the thermostat’s **About › Wi-Fi** screen.
6. If the signal is weak, compare performance closer to the router or consider an extender.
7. Record any error and contact ecobee support if needed.

ecobee identifies a signal below 75% as a possible cause of connection problems. A percentage is not a guarantee of performance.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat health-history` shows whether the router or the internet dropped at the same time, and `kilobat devices --all` marks a device that stopped answering as away. To check the signal where it sits, take your Mac there and use Kilobat’s [radar](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/find-better-wifi-spot).

## Questions

**Which ecobee thermostats use 5 GHz?**

ecobee lists Premium, Enhanced and Smart Thermostat with Voice Control as supporting both 2.4 and 5 GHz.

**How much data does an ecobee thermostat use?**

ecobee lists 5 MB per month for Smart Thermostat Essential. The cited support pages do not give a daily or monthly total for the other models covered here.

**Can I test with a phone hotspot?**

ecobee suggests it as a temporary comparison. Check your model’s band support and mobile plan first.

## See your network from your Mac

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network.
