# Brother printer Wi-Fi: Direct setup and connection fixes

Brother printers can use a wireless network, and supported models offer a direct connection without a router. The setup menus and features depend on the model.

Wi-Fi

Check the exact printer model’s network specifications for supported Wi-Fi bands.

Security

Check the exact model’s network manual for supported security modes.

Setup network

Direct network names vary by model; use the SSID displayed or printed by the printer.

Models

**Checked 2 November 2026.** Brother network manuals for DCP-1200W, HL-L2400DW series and MFC-J6955DW series, checked November 2026.

## Wi-Fi it needs

For ordinary network printing, the printer connects through a local network. A Mac or phone on that network can then use a compatible printing method.

Brother calls the direct mode Wireless Direct or Wi-Fi Direct in different manuals. It connects a device to a supported printer without a separate wireless router.

The network name, password, controls and supported radio bands vary across Brother printers. Use the manual for the exact model rather than applying a label printer’s settings to a home printer.

For AirPrint, confirm the particular printer supports it. Apple recommends that a Mac and its network printer are on the same network.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat scan` lists the networks around your Mac with their band and channel, so you can see whether yours is on 2.4 GHz at all, and `kilobat channels` names the least crowded channel. More in [Wi-Fi on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/wifi-analyzer-mac).

## Set it up

To print through a router, use your printer’s network setup instructions first. The following general steps apply after the printer is configured on the local network.

1. Turn on the printer and complete its initial setup.
2. Connect the printer to your local network using its model-specific instructions.
3. Connect the Mac to the same network.
4. Open **System Settings › Printers & Scanners**.
5. Add the intended printer and follow the Mac’s prompts.

### Connect directly

Brother’s DCP-1200W manual describes Wireless Direct and a printer network name beginning `DIRECT-`. Other models use different names and may show or print the network name and password.

Brother’s MFC and HL manuals describe Wi-Fi Direct setup. Enable it using the correct model’s controls, then select the displayed SSID on the mobile device and enter the displayed password.

On supported models, the phone or computer may leave its normal Wi-Fi connection while using the printer’s direct network. Reconnect to the regular network afterwards.

### DCP-1200W Wireless Direct

1. Press the **Wi-Fi** and **Paper** buttons together. The printer enables Wireless Direct and prints an information sheet.
2. On the phone or computer, select the SSID printed on the sheet and enter its network key.

### HL-L2400DW Wi-Fi Direct

1. On the printer, select **Network › Wi-Fi Direct › Manual** and turn Wi-Fi Direct on when prompted.
2. Select the SSID displayed by the printer in the mobile device’s Wi-Fi settings and enter the displayed password.

Brother also documents a push-button method for compatible mobile devices. Menu names and methods can differ on other models.

**Kilobat can help.** Once it has joined, Kilobat’s **Tools › Devices** lists it with its address and maker, and [new-device alerts](https://kilobat.app/docs/home-network#new-devices) tell you whenever something new joins your home Wi-Fi.

## How much data it uses

If you have a capped connection, check the printer’s documentation for internet-dependent features and software downloads before using them.

The cited Brother network manuals do not publish a typical internet data-use figure for print jobs. Local printing and any separately configured cloud or update features can use different paths.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat counts what your Mac sends and receives, app by app, not what other devices use. On a shared or capped connection, its [bandwidth monitor](https://kilobat.app/mac-bandwidth-monitor) and [hotspot data saving](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data) look after the Mac’s share.

## Guest, hotel and dorm Wi-Fi

Guest, hotel or campus Wi-Fi can keep clients apart. That can prevent a phone or Mac from discovering a network printer even when both have internet access.

Ask the network administrator whether local printing is permitted. The same network name does not guarantee that guests can communicate with one another.

A supported direct mode provides a separate device-to-printer connection. Follow the exact model’s manual and reconnect to your ordinary network after printing.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat devices --bonjour` lists the devices your Mac can reach and the services they advertise. If other devices do not appear, client isolation is one possible cause; sleeping devices and discovery settings can also affect results.

## When it won’t connect

Check power, the selected connection and the printer’s instructions before restoring settings.

1. Check that the printer is on and ready to print.
2. For network printing, confirm the Mac and printer use the intended local network.
3. Check the selected printer in the print dialog.
4. For a direct connection, use the SSID and password displayed or printed by the printer.
5. Consult Brother’s manual for the exact model if the printer is still missing.

Do not assume that another printer’s default password or SSID applies to your device.

**Kilobat can help.** Before you blame the device, Kilobat’s [Why can’t it connect?](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/why-cant-it-connect) and `kilobat diagnose` check the Wi-Fi, router, internet and DNS from your Mac.

## When it keeps going offline

A printer may appear offline because of power, network connectivity or a problem with the print queue.

1. Check the printer is on and shows no paper or other error.
2. Check the Mac and printer remain on the intended network.
3. Open the print queue and inspect any failed job.
4. Restart the printer and try the job again.
5. Follow Brother’s support instructions for the model if it remains offline.

Restoring network settings can require the printer to be set up again. Have its manual and network details available before doing so.

**Kilobat can help.** `kilobat health-history` shows whether the router or the internet dropped at the same time, and `kilobat devices --all` marks a device that stopped answering as away. To check the signal where it sits, take your Mac there and use Kilobat’s [radar](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/find-better-wifi-spot).

## Questions

**Does Brother Wi-Fi Direct need a router?**

No. On supported models, the direct connection links the device and printer without a separate wireless router.

**Where is the Direct password?**

The location varies by model. Brother’s manuals describe displaying or printing the SSID and password; use the manual for your printer.

## See your network from your Mac

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network.
