url: "https://kilobat.app/cloud-gaming"
description: "While GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Boosteroid, Amazon Luna or Shadow plays, Kilobat shows ping, jitter, loss and the stream’s bitrate, flags AirDrop scanning, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and background uploads as they happen, pauses them in one click, and afterwards says when the game stuttered and why."

For cloud gaming

# Know why the stream stuttered.

The game runs in a data center and arrives as video, so every hiccup on your Mac shows up as a blurry frame or a late jump. Kilobat watches the session while you play, names what is in the way right now, pauses it in one click, and afterwards says which minutes stuttered and what was going on at the time.

## Sound familiar?

- “GeForce NOW says my network is fine, then the picture turns to mush.”
- “Xbox Cloud Gaming stutters every few seconds on my MacBook.”
- “It was smooth until Photos started syncing.”
- “How much data does an hour of cloud gaming use on a hotspot?”

## Why cloud gaming stutters on a Mac.

A cloud game is a live video stream that has to arrive on time, every frame, for as long as you play. A speed test averages ten seconds and calls the line fine. These are the usual culprits on a Mac, and what Kilobat does about each.

1. ### A hitch every few seconds, like clockwork

   AirDrop and Handoff scanning: the Mac’s Wi-Fi radio hops off your channel to look for nearby devices.

   Flags it while you play, and **Pause AirDrop and background transfers** turns AirDrop’s link off until the session ends. Free:
2. ### Smooth on cable, blurry on Wi-Fi

   The Mac is on 2.4 GHz, slower and more crowded. GeForce NOW, Xbox and Boosteroid all ask for 5 GHz or Ethernet.

   Says so the moment the session starts, and names the 2.4 GHz stretches in the report. Free:
3. ### The picture drops to low quality when Photos or Dropbox syncs

   A background upload fills your upload, and the game’s input and acknowledgements queue behind it.

   Names the app as it happens, with iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Time Machine and macOS updates by name. With Pro, one click holds Dropbox, Google Drive and Steam downloads until you stop playing. Pro:
4. ### Worse in one room, or after a while

   A weak signal, or a Mac that clings to a far mesh node.

   Flags a weak signal live, and the report names a far mesh node when the Mac stayed on one. Pro:
5. ### Stutters with nothing else running on the Mac

   Another device on your network streaming or downloading.

   Your router’s traffic counters (UPnP) or a paired Mac running Kilobat show the line busy with traffic your Mac didn’t send. Pro:
6. ### Bad sessions while your router and the internet answered fine

   Your provider, the path to the data center, or the service turning the picture down.

   Says the stutter was beyond your router, so you stop rearranging the living room and try a closer server region. Pro:
7. ### The hotspot plan ran out mid-game

   A cloud game is video all session long and can use several gigabytes in an hour.

   On a metered network it shows the data an hour at the current bitrate, the session’s projected total, and when your budget there runs out. Free:

## Before, during and after the session.

Kilobat notices the session from the service’s own traffic. It never sees the game, the video or your account.

1. Starts

   ### It knows a game is on.

   GeForce NOW, Boosteroid or Shadow in their Mac apps, and GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Amazon Luna, Boosteroid or Shadow in a browser, once a steady one-way stream of 3 Mbps or more arrives and a service host can be identified. Video on standard web ports and two-way calls usually do not qualify; another busy browser tab can affect the estimate.

   Free:
2. While you play

   ### The line, the bitrate and what’s in the way.

   Ping, jitter and loss to the stream’s own server (or the internet when it ignores ping), the bitrate from qualifying client traffic, the data so far, and AirDrop, 2.4 GHz, a weak signal or a busy app flagged the moment they show up, with one button to pause AirDrop and, with Pro, supported background apps.

   Free:
3. After

   ### The report.

   A card in Health › Cloud gaming with the ping and bitrate over the session, each stutter in rose and one sentence for it, such as “Stuttered at 21:14 for 40s: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi while iCloud Photos uploaded.” Kilobat counts the stutters for free; Pro names the causes and what to change.

   Free:

While you play

## What’s in the way, the moment it is.

Health › Cloud gaming shows the session as it runs: ping, jitter and loss over the last 30 seconds, the stream’s bitrate and the data so far. Below them, whatever on this Mac is in the way right now, each with what to do.

- **AirDrop is scanning:** paused in one click until the session ends. macOS asks for an administrator password once.
- **Wi-Fi is on 2.4 GHz:** join the 5 GHz network or plug in a cable.
- **iCloud Photos is uploading:** named as itself, not as cloudphotod, with where to pause it in Photos.
- **Dropbox is uploading:** with Pro, held with Google Drive, OneDrive and Steam downloads until you stop playing, or until you switch to it.

On a hotspot or a network marked metered it adds the data an hour at the current bitrate, where the session is heading over your usual session length, and when your budget there runs out.

**GeForce NOW**Live · 25 min

(Ping)19 ms (Jitter)4 ms (Bitrate)27 Mbps (Data)5.1 GB

**Wi-Fi is on 2.4 GHz** (Join your router’s 5 GHz network or use Ethernet)

**AirDrop is scanning** (Its scans make the stream stutter every few seconds)

**Dropbox is uploading** (Kilobat can pause it until you stop playing)

**Pause AirDrop and background transfers** (Back when the session ends)*Pause*

**12 GB an hour at this rate** (About 18 GB for a 1 h 30 min session)

The report

## Every stutter, with what was going on.

When the session ends, Kilobat lines up the ping and the stream’s bitrate second by second with your router, the Wi-Fi band and signal, AirDrop, the busiest other app and other devices on the network. A stutter is two seconds or more of pings lost or 100 ms over your usual, or three seconds or more of the picture dropping to under 40% of its bitrate. Each one gets everything that held at the time, the Mac’s own conditions first.

Terminal

```
# The session now: line, bitrate, data, what’s in the way
$ kilobat cloud-gaming
GeForce NOW · live 25 min
  ping 19 ms to its server · jitter 4 ms · loss 0% · 27 Mbps · 5.1 GB so far
  ! Wi-Fi is on 2.4 GHz. Join your router’s 5 GHz network or use Ethernet.
# After each session
$ kilobat cloud-gaming reports
Coding agents read the same through the MCP tool `get_cloud_gaming`. [Read the docs](https://kilobat.app/docs/calls#cloud-gaming).
**Will this call hold up?** A speed test for capacity, and a stutter test for the short spikes that speed tests average away.
## Questions
**Why does cloud gaming stutter on a Mac when the speed test is fine?**
A speed test averages ten seconds; a cloud game needs every frame on time for an hour. A Mac adds two things of its own. AirDrop and Handoff make the Wi-Fi radio hop channels every so often, and Photos, iCloud Drive, Time Machine and updates upload and download in the background. Kilobat flags both while you play and pauses AirDrop in one click.
**Which services does it recognise?**
GeForce NOW, Boosteroid and Shadow in their Mac apps, and GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Amazon Luna, Boosteroid and Shadow in a browser. In a browser, Kilobat names the service from the hosts the browser talks to, which it learns from its network filter or reverse DNS; a stream it can’t name is left alone rather than guessed at.
**Will it mistake YouTube or a video call for a game?**
Kilobat requires sustained, mostly one-way traffic and a known cloud-gaming host in the browser. Standard web video and most calls do not meet those tests. A different busy tab in the same browser can still affect the estimate.
**How much data does cloud gaming use?**
Most services don’t publish a figure for data an hour. A stream that ran at 25 Mbps the whole hour, what GeForce NOW asks for 1080p at 60 FPS, would move about 11 GB. Kilobat measures what your session actually uses, and on a hotspot shows the data an hour, where the session is heading and when your budget runs out.
**Can Kilobat see my games or my account?**
No. It sees how many bytes each app sends and receives and to which address, as Activity Monitor does, and pings the internet, your router and the stream’s server once a second. Everything stays on your Mac.
**Does pausing AirDrop change my settings?**
It turns AirDrop’s link (AWDL) off until the session ends, after macOS asks for your administrator password, and turns it back on when you stop playing, when Kilobat quits, or after three hours at most. AirDrop, Sidecar and Universal Control are off meanwhile.
**Is it free?**
Noticing sessions, the live numbers and culprits, pausing AirDrop, the data on a hotspot and the stutter count are free. Kilobat Pro, $29 once with a 7-day free trial, names what was going on at every stutter and holds sync apps while you play.
